Did you know it all?

Commerce has been the essence of the world for aeons. Civilizations after civilizations have been existent on the basis of commerce. Commerce means a simple and efficient means of leading life as every human does not possess every element that is necessary for him/her to lead life. Yet not so simple as it seems. It calls for a rigmaroll to make all things available to all humans to sustain and yet it is not quite possible for all the humans to have all the things made available. The first ever thing that probably a man did to cease deprivation of the most needed commodities was to get into the Barter System of commerce. One man exchanged the goods that he had in surplus with another man for the goods that he may have understood to be necessary for him to lead life which was actually in surplus with another man. Alas!!! world never remained small although it is said to be a small world. There were civilizations after civilizations and commodities after commodities that the man recognized to be the quintessential ones for him to lead a life, although may not have been comfortable but to meet the ends. Lack of facility in the Barter System it was mans most worthy or unworthy invention called money. Barley may not have been able to buy rice in exchange but Money most definitely could buy everything under the sun.

The term commerce today instantly relates to another term, commodity, facilitator or what ever it is to be called Money. Commerce has been essentially involved with the flow of money and its reconciliation with regards to every transaction and action performed with money. Money was flown to buy commodities and live a life. Civilizations gathered knowledge. They wanted to do more with money than just leading a life. The money used to purchase commodities once was now used to purchase money now. Investments became a part of life. Commerce took ground and the world probably saw commerce as the most vital part of its life.

As said earlier one of the main functions of commerce is reconciliation, whether be it on the bearers front or the national front. Came the concept probably of the Debit/Credit, receivables, payables, sundries etc when the money had to be reconciled. But is that all commerce related to?? No. In todays world it plays a much larger role when talking of business. Commerce is the essence of the businesses and therefore should I call it to be the essence of a nations GDP?

Commerce has seen a tremendous change in its attributes from ages to the era of technology. From its erstwhile conventional method of transaction commerce has seen a major change in its outlook. It just has not been the reason for the world to work but has become a matter of convenience. Thanks to a technology called the E-commerce or the Electronic Commerce. Although it has been a welcome change for any organization to go online and have the business running online today, it must definitely have been a factor of apprehension or rather a strict no-no when having the commerce to go online was proposed. It has evolved over ages now. I remember those days in the early 90′s when there were special designated courses that were offered to be taught for e-commerce. Today if some one makes a purchase online it is probably the result of the umpteen number of years that have gone into refining the system to a near perfection.

Going online for any organization means different things to different organizations. Does that essentially mean that an organization is going forward in the direction of Electronic Business? I would probably the e-commerce a subset of e-business. Contradictorily e-commerce may not be a part of e-business. The business could be just about sharing information online while some one else pays the organization for the information to be shared. But looking at an e-business its all encompassing of e-commerce. Typically any business in which there is a transaction of money involved means that a mode of commerce is definitely present. Considering any organization online which is selling a commodity is inclusive of sales and payment for the order. Money involved here in this transaction brings in the concept of commerce.

Although not a technocrat, i would like to mention how an e-commerce structure would be generically architected. There is the user or the buyer with his/her terminal attempts to buy an article online. This would require his/her credit card number as a mode of payment. This information is then passed on to the central server through the internet. The server authenticates the information of the user and then processes the sale order. The central system may have been integrated with certain inventory management systems like an Enterprise Resource Planning system and such like the same which would would check the inventory to be made available for the customer. The above is just an generic overview of the technology base that is involved in making a e-commerce structure work.

Well, all said and done does the user of an e-commerce platform feel safe about his transaction? Is it reliable? Is the e-commerce model for business easy and simpler? Is it the most economical way to run a business? Is it going to be the future or is it going to be the past? Is what they call ” Mobile Commerce” going to be the in thing? Points to ponder eh?
